I'm inspired a lot by music: Tom Waits, Frank Black, Bruce Springsteen, Nick Cave. Textural landscapes and dense storytelling builds worlds in short timeframes. You can feel for the narrators in Springsteen's work and find underlying motivations and foibles in the other's. A good story is important to me.
I'm inspired a lot by television and movies: Paul Thomas Anderson, the Coen Bros., Christopher Nolan, Edgar Wright. Painting with character and composing amazing orchestras of light, sounds, and environments transporting the viewer into a place they never imagined possible.
I'm inspired a lot by the natural world: Rock formations from tectonic movements and volcanic flows, plants growing in places you wouldn't expect that build symbiotic relationships with other animals, animals and their engenuity to create tools and mimic others and find ways to create the most amazing instinctual social displays.
I'm inspired a lot by books: Stephen King, Philip K Dick, Mark Helprin, H.P. Lovecraft. A well written story can be an amazing mirror to what we see in ourselves and what we do. Telling stories is what illustration is; a narration of someone's idea or words.
I'm inspired a lot by the little things: dust gathering on the surface of old colored glass, moss and lichen taking over the boundaries of our gardens and retaining walls, the edges of pocket change sandwiching different layers of metals both knurled and smoothed from time being abused.
